How to check whether a phone is carrier locked before adding eSIM

Check whether your phone is carrier locked before buying a second-provider or travel eSIM, and know when to ask the original carrier.

Why lock status matters

A carrier lock can limit the networks a phone may use. It is separate from eSIM hardware: a phone can show an EID or an eSIM setup menu and still be locked to the original provider. This is especially important before buying a travel eSIM or moving to a different home network. Vodafone UK states that a device must be network unlocked to use its eSIM.

Do not assume a device is unlocked because it was paid off, advertised as “SIM free,” or works with its existing line. Those facts may be helpful, but they do not replace the device’s lock status or the original carrier’s confirmation.

iPhone: use the Carrier Lock field

On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About. Apple says an unlocked iPhone displays No SIM Restrictions next to Carrier Lock. If another value appears, contact the carrier named by the device or the seller. Only that carrier can explain eligibility and process for removing its lock.

If you are evaluating a used iPhone, check this field while signed in and with the device in hand. Also confirm the model and original region. An unlocked status cannot turn a non-eSIM regional variant into an eSIM variant, so pair this step with the iPhone model and region checklist.

Android and other phones: get the provider’s answer

Android interfaces vary by manufacturer, country, software version, and carrier build. Rather than trusting a universal menu path, start with the original carrier’s account or support channel and ask whether the exact IMEI is unlocked for use on another network. Give identifiers only through official channels. If the device is sold second-hand, ask the seller for proof of completed unlocking and verify with the original provider when possible.

Once the lock is clear, check the intended provider’s support for the model and plan. Read eSIM hardware versus carrier support and the full compatibility checklist before scanning a QR code. Unlocking addresses one gate; it does not guarantee regional, software, or carrier-plan eligibility.
